Peru Clinic Fined Nearly $190,000 for Leaking Shakira’s Private Medical Records
A top private clinic in Peru has been fined over $188,000 for leaking the confidential medical records of global music icon Shakira.
The Colombian superstar, 48, was briefly hospitalized in February at the Delgado Auna Clinic in Lima for an undisclosed abdominal condition. Just two days later, she returned to the stage in the Peruvian capital. However, shortly after her hospital visit, details from her medical records surfaced on social media, triggering public outrage and a formal investigation.
The Delgado Clinic, located in Lima’s upscale Miraflores district and known for catering to the country’s elite, initially announced an internal investigation into what it described as a “serious ethical breach” of its code of conduct and data protection policies.
On Wednesday, Peru’s health regulatory body, Susalud, confirmed it had imposed a fine of 668,750 soles (approximately $188,355) on the clinic. The agency classified the leak as a “serious violation” of patient rights, emphasizing that every individual has a right to privacy, dignity, and the secure handling of personal health information.
This incident has reignited discussions around medical confidentiality and the responsibilities of healthcare providers in safeguarding patient data, especially in high-profile cases.
